Days turned into weeks, weeks became a month in a whirlwind of giggles and late nights.
After he finished work he would come for dinner and a movie, we’d hang out and get to know each other. He always slipped out before the sun rose with a soft kiss on my forehead and a promise to return.
My days were slow and meaningful. Sun, dirt, plants and clay. Video calling with Jace while I prepared a new lesson and she wrangled a busy toddler. I had quite a few returning clients who wanted to continue learning and many new people signing up. I started to dream about one day opening a larger studio.
Eventually, the day came when I had to leave my comfortable home bubble to celebrate Jace’s birthday.
Without Don by my side, I felt a little strange as I knocked on the door of the intimidating Goth Manor. Apparently, the lady of the house had met Jace while getting a tattoo and was trying her hand at party planning.
The party went off without a hitch, Don had mentioned tales of the house being haunted, which had Jace and I peering at coats of armour with suspicion and watching paintings as we walked by. It was fun to imagine ghosts existing and living in the tea pot of this very serious, very rich family.
After Jace blew out the candles, she and Tad pulled me into a quiet corner as other guests danced. “Guess what,” Jace demanded, he face glowing and eyes bright. Before waiting for my answer she hurried on, “We’re having another baby!”
Thrilled, I embraced them both. “Dino is going to be such a great big brother!” I exclaimed. The warmth and happiness I felt for them was what I imagined others felt in normal, caring families. This love. Pure, honest and open.
I couldn’t wait for it to be us and Don hanging out all together.
An awesome foursome and two little monkeys.
Until next time,
