Lifting my arm to knock on the door, I heard joy filled giggles and mouth-made airplane noises. Smiling, I stepped to my left to peek through the window at Jace and Dino playing.
The pregnancy was leaving her sick and drained so much of the time, giving Dino and I lots of time to hang out and garden together.
With a happy heart, I went back to knock. “Bry!” I heard Dino’s sweet voice call, excitedly.
Opening the door, Jace’s face was pale. Giving her the ginger tea I’d made, I smiled, “I’m glad to see you two playing.” I said gently, “But, Mumma needs to go rest now.” I gave her a pointed look. Patting the little boy on his head and giving him a kiss, Jace mouthed a thank you before heading to sit down.
“You and I,” I said, looking down at Dino, “have some fruit to pick.” His chubby little face lit up as he took my hand and we closed the door quietly behind us.
The two block walk to my house was enough to wear Dino out, so I decided to make us a quick snack before a nap. “After rest time, we can pick all the apples.” I told him, his eyes heavy. Once he was out, I made myself a coffee and sat in the patch of sun next to my bed, watching him sleep.
There is something fulfilling about being a part of someone’s village, being able to be there for them in hard times, creating family where there once wasn’t one. Breathing deeply to draw in the aroma of my drink, my stomach turned. Just a little. Just slightly.
I took a sip, waiting for the warm bitterness to seep into my being only for it to make me gag.
No, no, no, no, no, I thought in horror as I looked into my mug as if it held the answers of the universe. Had I not been spending so much time talking to Jace recently, I might not have thought anything of it. Glancing at the cherub sleeping, all tiny and cute in my bed, the panic began to rise. From my belly, up into my chest.
Trying to be as quiet as possible, I crawled over to my dresser and started rummaging frantically. I found the box I’d bought and stuffed there just in case, opened it and rushed to the bathroom.
Reading the instructions, my hands shook. It’s a false alarm, I told myself. You’re just being silly, after all this baby talk with Jace.
Ten minutes dragged on as I waited to check the results. An eternity later, my timer went and I let out a shaky breath. “It’s fine.” I said, my voice too loud in the bathroom which suddenly felt too cramped.
Closing an eye, as if that might help, I picked up the stick and looked gingerly at the two lines that had formed. Blinking rapidly, I looked harder, hoping I was wrong.
I was not.
Taking a peek to make sure Dino was still asleep, I dialled Don’s number, heart in my throat.
“Hey, babe,” He answered, voice smooth and rich.
Stumbling over my words, I explained the situation. “The test is probably defective.” I ended with. Silence met my ramblings. “…Don?”
“I’m here. Just shocked. It’ll be fine, I’m sure.” Silence filled the air again.
“Listen, Brydie, I have to go finish work. I’ll see you tonight.” The call disconnected, as I stood in shock, phone still pressed to my ear.
I was still standing like that when Dino called out, getting myself together we spent the rest of the afternoon picking fruit. Taking cheeky bites and laughing, Dino’s face shone. Laughing along I wondered if I could have a little friend with me all the time.
I’d never considered it. Could I be a mother?
I guess we’ll soon find out.
Until next time,
